Subj: Refute this slander immediately and forcefully

When Gov. Romney withdrew from the Republican campaign for President, he cited among his reasons:
“And Barack and Hillary have made their intentions clear regarding Iraq and the war on terror. They would retreat and declare defeat. And the consequence of that would be devastating. It would mean attacks on America, launched from safe havens that make Afghanistan under the Taliban look like child’s play. About this, I have no doubt… And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.”
You, the Democratic leadership, cannot allow this slander to go unchallenged.

Call a joint news conference – all four of you together.

Here is a suggested prepared text:
Gov. Romney withdrew yesterday from the Republican campaign for President. In doing so, he stated,
“And Barack and Hillary have made their intentions clear regarding Iraq and the war on terror.
We are here together to set the record straight.

Yes, on Sep 11, 2001, our country was attacked by members of al Qaeda. This attack was conducted on the watch of Republican President George W. Bush, who had previously chosen to ignore the warnings of his counter-terrorism czar Richard Clarke regarding the danger of al Qaeda, who had previously chosen to ignore the “hair-standing” warnings of DCI Tenet regarding the danger of al Qaeda, and who had previously ignored the warning contained in his August “daily briefing” that Osama bin Laden hoped to launch an attack on American soil.

Immediately following the attack, President Bush declared to the country that,
“I've directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice.”
Six-and-a-half years later, Osama bin Laden is still free.

In the days, weeks, and months following the attack, the world poured out its goodwill on America.

In the days, weeks, and months following the attacks, partisanship here at home was forgotten.

We gave our President our trust.
We trusted him to defend our country.

He abused that trust to launch a war-of-choice on Iraq, from whose ashes a new terrorist threat has sprung – the so-called “al Qaeda in Iraq” – a terrorist group that did not exist before we shamelessly attacked Iraq.

The largest, best-equipped, best-trained military in the world is losing two wars to third-world insurgents.

Just this week, DNI Mike McConnell testified before a Senate panel that,
“Al Qaeda is gaining in strength from its refuge in Pakistan and is steadily improving its ability to recruit, train and position operatives capable of carrying out attacks inside the United States…”
Given this deplorable record, does anyone still believe that the Republicans can protect us better than the Democrats? For Gov Romney to make this claim is not only arrogant, it is delusional.

Finally, by playing the “soft-on-terror” card, Gov Romney once again reverts to that staple of Republican politics: playing on our fears. The Republicans continue to invoke our fear – purely for political gain - because they have nothing positive to offer. They cannot offer us hope for a better tomorrow for ourselves and our children. They cannot offer us a better future vision for America. All they can offer us is fear, in perpetuity.

My fellow Americans, the anti-terrorist record of this Republican Administration is deplorable – yet the Republicans want you to continue to trust them to defend our great country.

You and I know better.
Let the Republicans know in no uncertain terms that you're ready to fight back!... and that as far as anti-terror cred goes, they lost theirs years ago!

  1. Keep at them. I'm afraid the Republicans have drunk too much kool-aid.
