Years of pedagogical experience convince me that ANYONE can correctly interpret a scatterplot & a line graph!
(... well, maybe just almost anyone: it could well be the case that the talking-head pundits don't show graphs because they don't understand 'em!)
[Just for fun: if you've a spare afternoon next fall, visit a 4th- or 5th-grade classroom - the walls will be adorned with VERY GOOD student-drawn graphs!
For what it's worth: doing "statistics" requires only 4th- and 5th-grade skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and drawing pictures!]
