W's legacy: a modest, honestly constructive proposal!

Having pointedly, deliberately, vocally walked away from the Mid-East peace process when he took office in 2001, W in recent weeks has asserted that he plans to bring peace to the region before he leaves office. It's not going too well:
Gunman kills 8 at Jerusalem seminary
Soldier, militants killed in Gaza violence
Syria, Iran vow to bolster ties to confront US and Israel
Meanwhile, in our backyard:
Nicaragua breaks Colombia ties
Colombia: Raid in Ecuador was justified
Venezuela accuse Colombia of war crimes
Here's an honest, sincere suggestion for W - a suggestion that just might secure for him something positive during his last few months in office:
Establish diplomatic relations with Cuba
Nixon went to China, which is now one of our strongest trading partners.

Fidel has stepped aside, so W wouldn't be formally "betraying" any Cuban-American constituency.

We have an embassy in Damascus - why not one in Havana?

... AND: this might help undercut some of Chavez's support. Cuba & Venezuela are currently best buds. Maybe if W reached out to Cuba, Raul would diss Hugo.

What can it hurt?

If W succeeds, he'll have a real feather in his cap.
If he fails, at least he'll have tried - and it's unlikely he can make our relations with Cuba any worse (no plausible downside here - this is good news for the rest of us!).
... and he's got a LOT better shot at establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba than he does of bringing peace to the Mid-East!

If any of my readers have W's ear, could you pass along this suggestion? Thanks!
